These rainy days on Little Crum Creek make great conditions for catching up with the red-backed salamander.
Though spending no part of its life in water, this amphibian prefers to maintain moist skin.
So damp & overcast days present a fine opportunity to get around comfortably.
We visited for just a while before its return to the wet cover of woodland leaf litter.

Years ago, I found a few totally red salamanders at the edge of our scrub woods. They were a blood red to a bright red in color. Before I could find out what they were some trucks had moved into that area and pretty much destroyed the whole space for any wildlife to grow. Haven’t seen a salamander back there since. But I did find one source that said the red salamander are extremely rare… so I don’t know whether to feel blessed that I had found it or terribly sad that it’s gone for ever in that place.

I’d say both feelings are fitting and surely they’re part of the drive to produce your wonderful haiga. There’s a similar mix of sentiment for old places long gone behind this blog. We never what’ll be driven over next.
